On Saturday April 13, 2013 the Harbor Gateway North Neighborhood Council held its fifth biennial Health Fair at the 118th Street School. Principal Ra’Daniel McCoy was very helpful in supporting our efforts and helping to notify the parents and surrounding community of this free event. Chair of the Ad Hoc Health Fair Committee was our District 7 Representative Rosario Rico who brought many new contacts for this Health Fair due to her work with UMMA Community Clinic and her masters’ degree studies at the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science.
Twenty-one health-related or community related agencies and organizations had tables under the canopies provided by Beacon House. Additionally the Humbert H. Humphrey Comprehensive Health Center Mobile Van provided screenings for hypertension, glucose levels, and cholesterol. Bienestar Human Services provided rapid HIV testing from their van. Gang Alternative Program (GAP) provided their large van with Internet access and parenting information and PhoneSells offered electronic recycling. Over 400 community members participated.
